THE DIRECT ROUTE
Driving directions— & cross via BC Ferries
BC FERRIES
There are schedules posted on the BC Ferries website. You will be leaving from Horseshoe Bay and arriving at Langdale (Sunshine Coast) terminal. There is a fee to walk on as well as a fee to drive on. You only need a reservation if you plan to bring a vehicle on the ferry (arrive a minimum of 30 mins prior to scheduled sailing time). Campers can be brought on the ferry too. BOOK YOUR FERRY TICKET AS SOON AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE ON THE BC FERRIES WEBSITE. Tickets sell out months in advance during the summer weekends. We also recommend reserving your sailing home if you plan to leave on a Sunday. *Note there is also a ferry terminal called Tsawwassen, this port does not travel to the Sunshine Coast— be sure to head to the Horseshoe Bay port. Check the BC ferries website on the day of your sailing for live updates about sailing statuses.
DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS
From Vancouver, take Trans-Canada Highway 1 to BC Ferries’ Horseshoe Bay terminal. Choose the Langdale route, a 40-minute journey across Howe Sound to the Sunshine Coast.
After you get off the ferry at Langdale terminal, follow the main traffic flow through the traffic lights and up the hill. This route will take you to Hwy 101, the north-south artery of the Sunshine Coast. You will pass through the upper portion of Gibsons (where we live), then continue toward the village of Sechelt. After exiting Sechelt, continue for approximately 15 minutes, passing by Halfmoon Bay. Now watch for the Blue & White Hwy Sign that says Rockwater Resort with an arrow indicating to turn left, this road is called Mercer, then almost immediately turn right up Ole’s Cove Road. Rockwater Resort is on the ocean at the end of Ole’s Cove Road. Total travel time from Langdale ferry terminal to Rockwater Resort is approximately 40 minutes.
THE SCENIC ROUTE
Fly to YVR airport —take a seaplane, Uber or rent a car
CAR RENTAL
There are many places in Vancouver where you can rent a vehicle. It is important to note that if you do rent in Vancouver you will need to pay a fee to bring your vehicle over on the ferry and we highly recommend reserving a spot on the ferry to ensure you get on. There is also Prime Rentals on the coast where you can rent on this side of the ferry to avoid those costs but if you plan to travel around the mainland then looking at a rental location in Vancouver might work well for you.
SEAPLANE
Skip the hassle of the ferry and instead fly from the South Terminal at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) directly to Sechelt. Sunshine Coast Air has flexible flight availability, plus the flight is about 15 minutes compared to ~2 hours via land. Seaplane cost is approx $200-$250pp /roundtrip. Plus, it’s a unique experience! If you need a pickup from Sechelt, just let us know and we can coordinate. There’s also a taxi service that can pick up/ drop off from 6am - 12am (this is a small town so it’s best to book your taxi pickup). Check out Prime Rentals to rent a car nearby in Sechelt.
UBER ON THE MAINLAND
If you’re planning on flying and don’t want to rent a car, we typically will Uber from YVR (costs about $60 CAD) and get dropped off at the pedestrian area at the ferry terminal. We can pick you up from Langdale if you need a ride. There’s also a local taxi service that can be booked in advance or the local car rental in Sechelt. *Please note! Uber is not available on the coast.
TAXI & RIDE SHARE ON THE COAST
There is a taxi company: Sechelt Taxi, they do not have a large fleet and service the whole coast, I would recommend reserving a pickup/drop off time in advance. There is another group called Coastal Rides, they operate more as a ride share service, they have an app and you are able to pre-book rides with them. *Noting again no Uber/Lyft on the coast.
PASSPORT REMINDER
Head’s up, Americans
You’ll need a passport or passport card to cross the border. Passport processing can take 8-11 weeks for standard service or 5-7 weeks if you expedite. So, if you haven’t already, make sure to get those documents ready in time. Border officers may ask you for an address for where you plan to stay, so make sure to have that handy when you cross.
